标题:Security for the Robot Operating System

简介:Future robotic systems will be situated in highly networked environments where they communicate with industrial control systems, cloud services or other systems at remote locations. In this trend of strong digitization of industrial systems (also sometimes referred to as Industry 4.0), cyber attacks are an increasing threat to the integrity of the robotic systems at the core of this new development. It is expected, that the Robot Operating System (ROS) will play an important role in robotics outside of pure research oriented scenarios. ROS however has significant security issues which need to be addressed before such products should reach mass markets. In this paper we present the most common vulnerabilities of ROS, attack vectors to exploit those and several approaches to secure ROS and similar systems. We show how to secure ROS on an application level and describe a solution which is integrated directly into the ROS core. Our proposed solution has been implemented and tested with recent versions of ROS, and adds security to all communication channels without being invasive to the system kernel itself. 简介:The European Commission appointed the high-level strategy group on industrial technologies to assess, discuss, and recommend support for research and innovation in the area of key enabling technologies, also in view of future research and innovation programmes. Two new key enabling technologies are proposed: artificial intelligence, and security and connectivity. The group also advises that, while biotechnology should be broadened to 'life sciences', the EU has to continue to prioritise advanced manufacturing technologies, advanced materials and nanotechnologies, micro-/nano-electronics and photonics. With the right level of ambition and investment, key enabling technologies will contribute to support growth and democracy through stronger citizens’ engagement, and prosperity through more equality and better jobs. The group recommends the EU and Member States to focus their policies on 'inclusive growth' and the sustainable protection of our planet. The main goal is Europe to be the best place to live, study, work and flourish.

标题:Critical condition prediction of adiabatic shear fracture in high-speed cutting TA2 alloy

简介:Titanium alloy, a special difficult-to-cut material, is hard to reach the occurrence of adiabatic shear fracture (ASF) in high-speed cutting. In this work, TA2 alloy was firstly taken as the workpiece in the high-speed cutting experiment under negative rake angle. The chip morphology transformation from serrated chip to isolated segment chip was obtained. The damage mechanism of ASF was investigated through scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observation on the fracture surface of isolated segment. Furthermore, based on saturation limit theory, the ASF prediction model was built up considering the conditions of stress, velocity, deformation, and constitutive relation. The critical cutting speed of ASF was predicted and verified experimentally. The influences of the cutting conditions and the thermomechanical properties on the occurrence of ASF were discussed. The results indicated that with the cutting speed increasing, the chip transformation from serrated chip to isolated segment chip was contributed to the periodic cycle of ASF. Comparing with other titanium alloys, TA2 alloy was more sensitive to ASF under negative rake angle and large feed.

标题:Super-high-thickness high-speed wire electrical discharge machining

简介:High-speed wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM-HS) of materials of super-high thickness (more than 1000 mm) is a challenging problem. First, sufficient energy is required to maintain the inter-electrode normal discharge. Next, there must be adequate inter-electrode dielectric fluid. Third, in order to generate a smooth cut surface, it is necessary to suppress the vibration of the wire electrode to reduce vibration lines on the cutting surface. To better understand these challenges, the energy and the flow of the medium between two electrodes were analyzed, allowing the establishment of a relevant model. The results indicated that for super-high-thickness machining, the pulse energy must be adequate to compensate for the energy consumed in the molybdenum wire and inter-electrode working liquid. In addition, the running speed of the wire electrode should be improved to ensure that there is a sufficiently high flow rate of the dielectric fluid. The servo control mode of the existing machine tools and dielectric fluid were improved and then a process experiment was performed. The experimental results show that the process can be carried out efficiently and stably and the workpiece surface can be cut smoothly using the improved working liquid and servo control mode.

标题:Effect of geometric feature and cutting direction on variation of force and vibration in high-speed milling of TC4 curved surface

简介:Curved surface parts with difficult-to-machine material are widely used in the industrial applications, and the three-axis NC machining with ball-end cutter is the commonly adopted method for some simple curved surface parts machining due to its high stiffness and simple operation. Due to the geometric feature variation for the curved surface and the bigger cutting force of the difficult-to-machine material, the cutting area and the cutting speed are changing all the time along the determined tool-path which results in a severe variation of cutting force and cutting vibration in high-speed milling process. This may not only affect the machining quality but also the tool life. In this way, the effect of the geometric feature of the curved surface and the cutting direction along the tool-path on the variation of force and vibration in high-speed milling of TC4 curved surface is studied. The experimental results show that both the cutting force and the cutting vibration increase when the tool-path curvature radius increases, while the cutting force decreases when the effective cutting radius increases and the cutting vibration will increase many times when the cutting area increases. Besides, the uphill cutting method for curved surface machining can obtain good machining quality and prolong milling cutter life. It can provide guidance for machining strategy selection especially for the cutting direction selection in the tool-path planning. The achievement, that can make both cutting force and cutting vibration small based on the geometric feature and the cutting direction, provides guidance for the machining planning of TC4 curved surface, which leads to improving machining quality and reducing tool wear.

简介:A demonstration hybrid fuel cell vehicle, developed by a consortium of companies, offers attractive powertrain costs, short refueling times and long driving ranges The major challenges for future road transportation and the global automotive industry are enabling individual mobility and reducing energy consumption as well as decarbonization. Electric vehicles with battery and fuel cell technology will be a key enabler to meet these challenges. Both technologies offer a complete zero-emissions powertrain approach from tank to wheel, and green electricity from well to wheel. Battery electric vehicles are more suitable for smaller vehicles and short-range (urban) usage, whereas larger vehicles with long driving range and high power demands benefit from the advantages offered by fuel cell technology.

标题:Is There a Moore's Law for 3D Printing?

简介:Three-dimensional (3D) printing (3DP) has received significant attention for its promise of reinventing the way products are manufactured. At times, there have been differences in the expectations of the public of what the technology would be able to do as compared with what the technology was capable of at a certain point in time. Although experts often feel that future improvements will overcome this, there is usually not a sense of how rapidly these future improvements will occur. The semiconductor industry and others have effectively addressed this problem by tracking how quickly the technology improves over time (i.e., Moore's law). This article looks at industrial stereolithography (SLA) 3DP and measures the technological improvement rate empirically at 37.6% per year and compares it with an estimate based on analysis of the patents that have been issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in SLA 3DP. This approach has been shown to give reliable estimates and in this SLA 3D case gives a very close estimate of 46.8% per year. We then find representative sets of patents and use the estimating technique to calculate the expected technological improvement rate for four other main types of 3DP: inkjet-powder-based 3DP (35.0%), metal selective laser sintering (SLS) (33.3%), fused filament fabrication (FFF) (16.7%), nonmetal SLS (21.1%), and for the 3DP domain as a whole (29.4%). Further analysis on the patent sets provides top assignees and the most central patents for each of the 3DP domains. Overall, the improvement rates found support the idea that 3DP is rapidly improving and, therefore, potentially capable of fulfilling its promise but also that some 3DP approaches (particularly FFF and nonmetal SLS) are likely improving at a lower rate.

简介:AbstractAll facets of activity in the speciality of Aviation Medicine are essentially aimed at enhancing aerospace safety. This paper highlights some innovative changes brought about by Aerospace Medicine in the three major fields of the speciality namely, medical evaluation, aeromedical training and research.Based on lab and field studies, military aircrew are now permitted flying with Modifinil as ‘Go’ Pill and Zolpidem as ‘No-Go’ Pill during sustained operations. Several other drugs for disabilities like Hypertension and CAD are now permitted for aviators. Comprehensive revision of policy permitting early return to flying is an on-going process. OPRAM courses for all three streams of aircrew in IAF have contributed to reduce aircraft accident rates. Human Engineering Consultancy and expert advice is provided by specialists at IAM as well as those in the field. In future, the country needs to provide better post-service opportunities to aerospace medicine specialists. This, in turn, will attract bright young minds to the specialty. The ISRO Humanin-Space programme will be an exciting challenge for all in this unique field.Aerospace Medicine continues to provide aerospace safety solutions to the IAF and the aviation industry.

简介:This paper presents an electro-hydraulic semi-active damper to harvest the suspension kinetic energy for the purpose of further improving the fuel efficiency of off-road vehicles. This regenerative damper can transform the reciprocating suspension vibration into unidirectional generator rotation, and meanwhile achieve approximately asymmetric rebound/compression damping force in a wide controllable region. The working mechanism of this new damper is first elaborated, and then its dynamic model is mathematically derived based on the first-principle analysis of hydraulic and electric components. A prototyping damper is designed and manufactured, and a series of experimental tests are conducted to demonstrate its effectiveness to generate the damping characteristic and energy harvesting capability.
