标题:A STEP-NC compliant robotic machining platform for advanced manufacturing

简介:In the era of advanced, intelligent, and flexible manufacturing, machining with industrial robots, it is expected to be set up in the next few years. This is due to the vast progress of these robots in terms of precision and stiffness. Moreover, there is a recent development of off-line programming. Consequently, industrial robots offer a real gain of modularity, flexibility, and access for machining on production lines, and are viable solutions to improve the productivity. At the same time, all the potentials of CAD/CAM solutions available for machining off-line programming are not fully exploited because of old G-code (ISO 6963, 1980) language that only enables the description of elementary actions and tools moves. In the context of Industry 4.0 and the development of smart equipments at all levels of production chain, the manufacturing digital thread has to be profoundly reconsidered in order to guarantee high-level information from the design to the manufacturing. In this paper, a solution is proposed based on the high-level programming STEP-NC standard combined with a suitable CAD/CAM solution for industrial robots machining. A complete platform has been developed to enable advanced and intelligent manufacturing with the possibility to integrate several modules of simulation, optimization, and visualization, as well as in-process fabrication adaptation, cloud manufacturing, and machine learning with database analytics.

简介:With the recent progress in the unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) technologies such as sensors and advanced control systems, the potential of these autonomous vehicles has been greatly improved. Reliability and robustness are two of the major demands for unmanned ground vehicle in particular for the field of combat operations. Accordingly, one challenge is to develop an advanced control system to handle all the nonlinearities inherited in the vehicle subsystems and the harsh environmental conditions. On the other hand, motion planning and perception capabilities for UGVs also need to be improved by using smart sensors and various path planning methods so that UGVs can move safely among obstacles and achieve its desired manoeuvres.

简介:According to the latest data, annual EU investment into R&D by the automobile and parts sector has risen by 7.4% to reach an all-time high of €53.8 billion. This contribution makes the automobile and parts sector the EU’s number one investor in R&D – ahead of pharma and tech. It is responsible for 27% of the region’s total R&D spending. Compared to other world regions, the EU auto sector by far leads the way in terms of R&D investment. Japan comes second in the global ranking with an investment of €29.8 billion per year, followed by the US with €18.5 billion. In fourth place comes China with €5.4 billion, or just one tenth of the EU’s annual spending.

While some industry reports focus on projections of where the market is heading, the Wohlers Report compiles details on how many 3D printers are actually sold each year. According to the new report, an estimated 1,768 metal AM systems were sold in 2017, compared to 983 systems in 2016, a surge of nearly 80 percent.

标题:Biocompatibility of Photopolymers in 3D Printing

简介:The biocompatibility of photopolymers in additive manufacturing (AM) often referred to as 3D printing (3DP) is an issue of concern due to, among other things, the unique parameters of the manufacturing process, which can influence the physical, chemical, and biological properties of AM-produced devices. The quality of AM-produced devices may consequently vary when identical parts are built using different 3D printers or even when the same 3D printer, parameters, process steps, and materials are used. In this novel study, representative materials built with stereolithography and material jetting processes were subjected to biological evaluation using the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) fish embryo test designed to determine acute toxicity of chemicals on embryonic stages of fish. The study demonstrates that the AM materials are toxic in zebrafish assays; however, the adverse effects of toxicity in some materials were reduced significantly after treatment with ethanol. Within the limitations of the study, it is evident that material composition and cleaning method are significant parameters by which the biological risks of photopolymers in 3DP can be assessed. Furthermore, the zebrafish biocompatibility assay is a reliable assessment tool for quantifying the toxicity of leachates in AM materials.

摘要:At present, ultra-precision cutting technology has been studied in Korean research institutes, focusing on development of ultra-precision cutting tool technology and ultra-precision control engineering. However, the developed technologies are still far behind advanced countries. It focuses on metals including aluminum, copper and nickel, and nonmetals including plastics, silicone and germanium which require high precision while using a lathe. It is hard to implement high precision by grinding the aforementioned materials. To address the issue, the ultra-precision cutting technology has been developing by using ultra-precision machine tools very accurate and strong, and diamond tools highly abrasion-resistant. To address this issue, this study aims to conduct ultra-precision cutting by using ECTS (Error Compensation Tool Servo) to improve motion precision of elements and components, and compensate for motion errors in real time. An IR camera is used for analyzing cutting accuracy differences depending on the heat generated in diamond tools in cutting to examine the heat generated in cutting to study cutting accuracy depending on generated heat.

标题:Leakage fault detection in Electro-Hydraulic Servo Systems using a nonlinear representation learning approach

简介Electro-Hydraulic Servo Systems (EHSS) are employed as actuators to track the desired trajectory and exert force in heavy-duty industrial applications. The EHSS is often prone to problems such as leakage and actuator seal damage during the course of its utilization. These faults which cannot be directly detected from current sensor values, can eventually result in complications and degrade control performance. The goal of this research is to use representation learning concepts to detect these faults with decreased complexity. The objective is to find a nonlinear mapping to transform raw data into another space in which classification becomes easier. The data are driven from the hydraulic supply pressure signal. To find the mapping, a custom-built optimization algorithm is proposed along with a suitable cost function to carry out the search for the new representation. The performance of the resulting transformation is tested in an experimental setting to show the merits of the proposed method.

The Promess Electro-Mechanical Assembly Press (EMAP) uses no pneumatics or hydraulics; instead, press motion is initiated by a servomotor and ball screw. A computer monitors the press ram's position and pressing force, and accepts data from additional external sensors. To make the pressure relief valve, the EMAP is fitted with an attachment that pumps fluid through the valve at 1.2 liters/min while it is in the press.

标题:An interactive method for predicting industrial equipment defects

简介:As a major aspect of vibratory verification and the recognition of imperfections and defects in rotating machines, gears have been the subject of much research. These elements are very requested and likely to present defects which evolve rapidly to the rupture. An approach is provided for fault identification on the premise of time-frequency signal analysis techniques. It is shown that the new technique is significant of the energy concentration on the instantaneous frequency of the individual components in the vibration signal, which allows monitoring of the signal amplitude and frequency modulation with a high degree of accuracy and in a small range of frequencies. The analysis of gear defects made on the measured signals can link the observed effects of vibration to material causes that generate them and provided a very powerful tool for maintenance purposes, especially in industry where competition is expressed by the quality and the costs. The main objective of this work is to improve the gear safety, the identification, and the development of vibration analysis techniques for the detection and diagnosis of defects in critical security on the systems gear transmission. To confirm the theoretical results, we have taken an example of furnace gear reducer.

标题:Pattern recognition based on-line vibration monitoring system for fault diagnosis of automobile gearbox

简介:Gearbox is an important equipment in an automobile to transfer power from the engine to the wheels with various speed ratios. The maintenance of the gearbox is a top criterion as it is prone to a number of failures like tooth breakage and bearing cracks. Techniques like vibration monitoring have been implemented for the fault diagnosis of the gearbox over the years. But, the experiments are usually conducted in lab environment where the actual conditions are simulated using setup consisting of an electric motor, dynamometer, etc. This work reports the feasibility of performing vibrational monitoring in real world conditions, i.e. by running the vehicle on road and performing the analysis. The data was acquired for the various conditions of the gearbox and features were extracted from the time-domain data and a decision tree was trained for the time-domain analysis. Fast Fourier Transform was performed to obtain the frequency domain which was divided into segments of equal size and the area covered by the data in each segment was calculated for every segment to train decision trees. The classification efficiencies of the decision trees were obtained and in an attempt to improve the classification efficiencies, the time-domain and frequency-domain analysis was also performed on the normalised time-domain data. From, the results obtained, it was found that performing time-domain analysis on normalised data had a higher efficiency when compared with the other methods. Instantaneous processing of the acquired data from the accelerometer enables faster diagnosis. Hence, online condition monitoring has gained importance with the advent of powerful microprocessors.

标题:The crack growth resistance of thin steel sheets under eccentric tension

简介:The stable crack growth in thin steel sheets is the topic of this paper. The crack opening was observed using a videoextensometry system, allowing the crack extension determination. J(R)-curve and delta(R)-curve were established from obtained data. The ductile tearing properties of different thin sheets of steel were determined, including the impact of the specimen orientation, from test performed on compact tension specimens loaded under two conditions. The effect of the material, the rolling direction, and loading rate on the crack growth resistance of thin steel sheets was analyzed. In addition to the crack growth resistance, J-integral values for crack initiation were also estimated. The relation between J(i) and J(0.2) was assessed using the basic mathematical and statistical methods. This relation was described by a linear regression model.

标题:A Novel Low-Carbon High-Strength Steel: Processing, Microstructure and Mechanical Properties

简介:A novel alloy steel has been processed through thermo-mechanical controlled rolling with two different finish rolling temperatures (FRT: 850 and 750) followed by air cooling and water quenching. Microstructural investigation using TEM showed that air-cooled steel processed at lowest FRT of 750 reveals nano-sized (10-20 nm) complex carbide precipitates of (TiMoV)C which are significant for precipitation hardening in ferrite matrix. Air-cooled steels exhibit 420-440 MPa yield strength and 640-680 MPa ultimate tensile strength along with 20-23% elongation. On the other hand, higher yield strength (900-1000 MPa) and tensile strength (1050-1150 MPa) along with lower 9-11% elongation are attributed to complex precipitation in primarily dislocated lath martensite structure achieved on water quenching. Evaluation of hot ductility, as measured by the reduction of area (RA), reveals that RA decreases in the temperature range of 700 to 850 and then rises up to 1100. The maximum achievable ductility of 69% at 1100 is related with the stability of austenite at high temperature, whereas minimum ductility (14%) at 850 is related with the formation of pro-eutectoid ferrite along the austenite grain boundaries in two-phase (austenite and ferrite) region.

简介:The following paper focuses on the philosophical idea of circular economy, a model of industrial ecology that suggests concrete solutions to achieve a sustainable way of living and an environmentally-friendly economy. Different to the linear model, the innovative circular economy approach comprises life-cycle thinking and considers both stocks and flows. In chapter 1 the work outlines the fact of pushing for economic growth for the last centuries. Chapter 2 then continues in highlighting the major characteristics of the next industrial era - the 4th industrial revolution. Successively chapter 3 introduces the concept of circular economy and briefly sketches its importance for global industrialisation. Chapter 4 focuses on the concepts of stocks and flows in circular economy and its importance in terms of production and waste. In chapter 5 and in the conclusions this paper outlines the concrete solutions and the additional value of circular economy that is to be brought for the current industrial system. The title of this paper alludes to the fact that concrete action is required in all sectors in order to make this revolution happen and to which extent Europe might be able to assume its responsibilities and lead such a shift to a more sustainable future.
