简介:This paper presents a multi-stage process of the development of a vision-based object sorting robot manipulator for industrial applications. The main aim of this research is to integrate vision system with the existing Scorbot in order to widen the capability of the integrated camera-robot system in industrial applications. Modern industrial robot Scorbot-ER 9 Pro is the focus of this research. Currently, the robot does not have an integrated vision system. Thus; a camera has been integrated to the robot gripper to achieve the target objectives. The main difficulties include establishing a relevant sequence of operations, developing a proper communication between camera and robot as well as the integration of the system components such as Matlab, Visual Basics, and Scorbase.

简介:Motion planning processes for industrial robots are complex tasks often done manually by human domain experts and result in robotic motion that lacks flexibility and adaptability in response to dynamic environments. In our work, we propose an automated control agent utilizing a convolutional neural network embedded in an actor-critic architecture that learns adaptive continuous motion behavior via reinforcement learning. The learning is based on direct sensory input without the need of directly programming the robot’s motion. We show that the learned behavior can account for uncontrollable dynamic environmental circumstances and helps to decrease time and cost of ramp up processes.

摘要:Both soft total quality management (STQ1VI) and lean manufacturing (LM) are philosophies for continuous improvement. Little is known about whether these can be integrated together or are in conflict. Furthermore, the nature of their integration together in the same enterprise is not clear. This paper tries to eliminate gap in operations management (OM) literature regarding the integration of these practices. To do this, it proposes a comprehensive model to be implemented in the developing economy of Malaysia, to investigate the linkages among elements of soft TQM and LM tools in the measured manufacturing sectors. A structured questionnaire was designed to validate the model and test the hypothesis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) through analysis of moment structure (AMOS 22) is utilised to empirically investigate the model based on primary data of 329 responses. Results obtained implied that hypothesis is significant and supported. Thus, both practices are complementary to each other.

标题:Application of lean manufacturing principles to improve a conceptual Pu-238 supply process

摘要:The mission of the United States (U.S.) Department of Energy's Pu-238 Supply Project is to rebuild capability to produce (PU)-P-238 at the kilogram scale in the U.S. This radioisotope is used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to power deep space probes, and the supply is dwindling. It was last produced in the U.S. in 1988. A conceptual design of a (PU)-P-238 supply process is described that uses existing processes and facilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Radiochemical Engineering Development Center. The rate-limiting section of the conceptual process was analyzed using discrete-event system simulation to determine expected production rates, bottlenecks, and the effects of time delays on the production rate. Process alternatives were generated based on Lean Manufacturing principles, and those were examined and compared to the original process using simulation to identify better operating strategies. Such strategies must include an early decision on whether to invest in in-house data centre capacity, and all of the associated costs and management that this entails; or to outsource top specialist third-party providers, ceding some control but also remaining free from such capital-intensive non-core activities. There are benefits and challenges to each approach, and there is an argument for a hybrid approach. Whatever is decided upon, it must be safe, secure, future-proof and sustainable.

标题:Spurring Innovation in a Sustainable Manufacturing Course

简介:A course on sustainable manufacturing has been developed and offered since 2010 at XYZ University. In the course, a comprehensive definition of manufacturing is adopted, covering not only material transformation processes but also any activities that are needed to support manufacturing such as product development and design, manufacturing systems design and operation, and supply chain systems design and operation. With such a comprehensive definition of manufacturing along with the comprehensive nature of sustainability, a radically different approach was necessary in order to effectively educate students on sustainable manufacturing. Innovation is emphasized and promoted throughout the course, as Albert Einstein succinctly put, "we can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Students have numerous opportunities to devise their innovative solutions while they develop new sustainable products, starting from ideation, to concept generation, to product design, to selection of manufacturing processes, and ultimately to fabrication of physical prototypes. Therefore, how to spur innovative minds among students has been the main challenge of the course. Four main methods have been devised and adopted to spur innovation: (i) by explaining the criticality of sustainability issues, (ii) by sharing existing and conceived examples and solutions, (iii) by providing practical methods, and (iv) by imposing thoughtful constraints. This paper presents the learning objectives, contents and approaches of the course, how those four methods have been implemented in the course, and the preliminary analyses of the effectiveness of those methods in spurring students' innovation potential as exhibited in their learning.
