简介:The income per capita grew in Western Europe at 0.12 per cent per year between the year 1000 and 1500. It means the income per capita in 1500 was only 82 per cent higher than what it was 500 years earlier. To give you a perspective of how slow the growth was, assuming the average Malaysia growth was 4.1 per cent, we have experienced the same increase in income per capita in less than 15 years (between 2002 and 2016) what Western Europe achieved in 500 years during the period. In terms of material progress, one year in Malaysia today would be equivalent to 33 years of income growth in Western Europe then. The growth rate was worse in Eastern Europe and Asia, growing at one-third the rate of growth of Western Europe.

Whilst it's not surprising that a future working environment with fully autonomous thinking and acting robots is a topic that captures imaginations, trying to work out the relevance of AI to today's manufacturing environment is somewhat less clear. Here, we ask Erik Johnson, chief architect, Epicor Software, to help debunk some common myths around AI and put the hyperbole into some context for manufacturers trying to work out its relevance today. AI is already an over-hyped technology within business. Its important manufacturers understand what it isn't before coming to a decision about what it is and how it should be used in a manufacturing context. Predictive analytics and machine learning are often confused with AI and whilst they have similar capabilities, they don't work in the same way. Where predictive analytics uses historical data to predict the future, AI goes further, analysing more variables to provide more detailed conclusions.

标题:Advanced manufacturing systems: socialization characteristics and trends

简介:Since 1960s, with the development of societal and related technologies, many advanced manufacturing systems (AMSs) and modes have been put forward, and they have attracted the attention of a large number of researchers in manufacturing, information and management fields. However, existing studies are mainly focused on the specific theoretical research of each AMS, and the horizontal comparison of the difference and evolution of these AMSs are not significant. Furthermore, most of the existing studies try to realize concrete technical implementation, and discussions on the relationship among these AMSs and social factors are relatively rare. Therefore, this paper aims to address this issue, and a brief overview of the development process of AMSs is first presented. Next, a tri-view model is established to analyze the evolution and socialization characteristics of AMSs. It is found that the sharing of manufacturing resources and capabilities, the value creation carriers, the value measuring criteria, the composition of the value chain and enterprise collaboration, and the user participation in manufacturing are all moving towards socialization. It is essential that the evolution and development of AMSs should also adapt this trend towards socialization in order to achieve better sharing of limited resources and efficient adding of value.

标题:Hybrid Production-System Control-Architecture for Smart Manufacturing

摘要:Highly customized products with shorter life cycles characterize the market today: the smart manufacturing paradigm can answer these needs. In this latter production system context, the interaction between production resources (PRs) can be swiftly adapted to meet both the variety of customers' needs and the optimization goals. In the scientific literature, several architectural configurations have been devised so far to this aim, namely: hierarchical, heterarchical or hybrid. Whether the hierarchical and heterarchical architectures provide respectively low reactivity and a reduced vision of the optimization opportunities at production system level, the hybrid architectures can mitigate the limit of both the previous architectures. However, no hybrid architecture can ensure all PRs are aware of how orienting their behavior to achieve the optimization goal of the manufacturing system with a minimal computational effort. In this paper, a new "hybrid architecture" is proposed to meet this goal. At each order entry, this architecture allows the PRs to be dynamically grouped. Each group has a supervisor, i.e. the optimizer, that has the responsibility: (1) to monitor the tasks on all the resources, (2) to compute the optimal manufacturing parameters and (3) to provide the optimization results to the resources of the group. A software prototype was developed to test the new architecture design in a simulated flow-shop and in a simplified job shop production.

简介A large portion of 3D printing supplies that come into the US are from China. This is especially true of PLA and ABS filament, which feature prominently in lists of imports. They are, after all, cheaper than the competition. However, this may be about to change with a new set of tariffs imposed by the current administration as part of their trade war with China. The 25% duty on imports on raw polymers and mono-filaments could affect the 3D printing industry in the long run.

While this round of tariffs has been bullish on many Chinese electronics and parts, they’ve also wedged in a lot of plastics. The statement from the trade office does not appear to mention 3D printing filaments directly, however once readers dig deeper they may notice that there are mentions of an increase in duties on plastic filaments of more than 1 mm excluding ethylene, vinyl chloride and acrylic polymers. This would mean that any 1.75 mm plastic filament outside of these will suffer (which is an extensive list).

Made in Space designed the Archinaut Power Kit for small satellites of about 330-lb. to 660-lb. (150 to 300 kilograms). As a result, these smaller vessels could potentially take on the duties of much larger satelites and stay in orbit for way longer. The kit launches into space on-board the craft and use on-board raw materials to make the solar array with the aid of astronauts on Earth using robotic manipulators.
