标题:TOLERANCES AND UNCERTAINTY IN ROBOTIC SYSTEMS

简介:The ability to be programmed for a wide range of tasks is what differentiates robots from dedicated automation. Consequently, robots can be faced with often-changing requirements and conditions. Conventional application development based on teach programming takes robots out of production and occupies personnel, limiting robots' effectiveness in these environments. Off-line programming solves these problems, but robot inaccuracy must be compensated by a combination of calibration, compliance, and sensing. This complicates up-front systems engineering and application development, but results in systems that can operate in a wider range of requirements and conditions. Performance can be optimized if application tolerances and process uncertainties are known. If they often change, optimization must be done dynamically. Automating this optimization is a goal of smart manufacturing. With its trend of increasing connectivity between the components of robotic systems both within workcells and to the enterprise, exchanging this information has become more important. This includes tolerance information from design through process planning to production and inspection, and measurement uncertainty from sensors into operations. Standards such as ISO 10303 (STEP), the Quality Information Framework (QIF), the Robot Operating System (ROS), and MT-Connect support this exchange to varying degrees. Examples include the assignment of assembly tasks based on part tolerances and robot capabilities; the automated generation of robot paths with tolerances arising from sensed obstacles; and the optimization of part placement to minimize the effects of position uncertainty. This paper examines requirements for exchanging tolerance and uncertainty in robotics applications, identifies how these requirements are being met by existing standards, and suggests improvements to enable more automated information exchange.

简介:Nowadays, there is a trend of significant robotic devices functionality increase. Accordingly, the robotic devices can perform more operations and have more new ways to control them. Therefore, in some cases there is a situation when the robotic device receives control commands, i.e. instructions for performing different operations from different alternative control channels. It is a problem of a command selection for execution when different control channels have contradictory information. If there are multiple control channels, which have fundamentally different principle of operation, and multiple commands, which might require the same resources for execution, we need a system that will take into account the specifics of channels and commands, store information about incoming commands and decide which command to execute. In this paper, we will present decision-making system with an internal control conflict resolution mechanism for robotics and the implementation example.

简介:In the 21st century, manufacturing companies are facing the challenge to remain competitive in global markets by finding a more sustainable approach to product design and manufacturing. This is associated with the main features of companies' competitive landscapes namely, simultaneous cost reduction and quality improvement of the product. It may appear that reaching both these goals together is prohibitively problematic as they are considered by "manufacturing leaders" as opposing objectives. However, much recent research has been done on introducing approaches to delivering low cost, high quality sustainable products based on finding a link between the design or the manufacturing processes and other key elements of sustainability; economic, environmental, and social. Indeed, these approaches often times include limitations such as the lack of integration between the design and manufacturing stages of the product and do not adequately address three key parts of sustainability; economic, environmental, and social. Consequently, these approaches, have a low applicability, and hence few opportunities for success. However, for delivering a sustainable product, the key parts of sustainability, as well as the integration of product design and manufacturing processes must be optimised in terms of one effective measure. This project aims to propose an approach for design and manufacturing sustainability. The combined sustainability index (CSI) is developed as a comprehensive evaluation metric for alternative scenarios of the process and also as a tool that enables decision makers to run optimal processes. The applicability of the CSI has to be tested and verified in a real industrial setting with the aim to improve the sustainability performance by designing a product and the corresponding manufacturing processes for that product. Process optimisation is carried out in terms of the highest CSI score achieved.

标题:Studio 7.5 Prints 3D ‘Woven’ Concrete Benches in Berlin

简介Berlin-based Studio 7.5 collaborated with Parisian 3D printing experts XtreeE to produce a series of concrete benches. The benches are the product of continuously printed concrete that display a woven pattern with significant complexity, which would have been impossible to replicate in a single mold. The method allows for a sturdy bench but is also far lighter than a full concrete bench. The continuously woven concrete benches present a texture that is not only visually reminiscent to woven textiles, it also follows the same production routine. It uses a continuous thread that runs along a path in order to create the construction’s outline and structure. While Studio 7.5 has a lot of experience with design, XtreeE were the ones with the know-how for concrete printing. Consequently, they provided the technology for this project, which they’ve used extensively before.
