标题:Optical Flow for Collision Avoidance in Autonomous Cars

简介:Autonomous cars, robotic platforms and other devices capable of unassisted movement are becoming widely considered as superior to human-based control in many areas. Such platforms, however, often are constructed using expensive equipment. We investigate the possibility of using simple setup consisting of an embedded computer module, such as smartphone, single camera and inertial measurement unit along with the concept of the optical flow to detect possible collisions given realtime, onboard processing as an alternative to compound systems based on radar and lidar devices. While most optical flow algorithms are not applicable for real-time processing, our findings prove that those which sacrifice accuracy to gain speed can still be upgraded while remaining accurate enough for the field of collision avoidance. We propose modifications to further enhance optical flow for given context. Our findings prove that using proposed setup consisting of both hardware and software allows for omitting expensive sensors in the field of collision avoidance.

简介:Each year, the Wohlers Report, the 3D printing and additive manufacturing state of the industry report, is released in the spring. For the past few years, I have reported on the industry’s overall growth from that analysis. True to form, I did the same this year: Wohlers Report 2018: 3D Printer Industry Rises 21 Percent To Over $7 Billion. A big part of the growth is based on the “Service Providers” category – and these companies add a substantial part to that upward trend, so I wanted to take some time to dig into this important and profitable section. According to Wohlers Report 2018, independent service providers worldwide generated an estimated $2.955 billion from the sale of parts produced by additive manufacturing systems in 2017. This is up 36% from the $2.173 billion reported for 2016. It is important to remember that this is from independent service providers. So this revenue doesn’t even include big companies like Stratasys with its own service bureau – Stratasys Direct, or 3D Systems with its Quickparts service division. Wohlers Associates maintains a great list of Service Providers as well.

摘要:Additive manufacturing (AM) is fundamentally different from traditional formative or subtractive manufacturing in that it is the closest to the ‘bottom up’ manufacturing where a structure can be built into its designed shape using a ‘layer-by-layer’ approach rather than casting or forming by technologies such as forging or machining. AM is versatile, flexible, highly customizable and, as such, can suite most sectors of industrial production. Materials to make these parts/objects can be of a widely varying type. These include metallic, ceramic and polymeric materials along with combinations in the form of composites, hybrid, or functionally graded materials (FGMs). The challenge remains, however, to transfer this ‘making’ shapes and structures into obtaining objects that are functional. A great deal of work is needed in AM in addressing the challenges related to its two key enabling technologies namely ‘materials’ and ‘metrology’ to achieve this functionality in a predictive and reproductive ways. The good news is that there is a significant interest in industry for taking up AM as one of the main production engineering route. Additive Manufacturing, in our opinion, is definitely at the cross-road from where this new, much-hyped but somewhat unproven manufacturing process must move towards a technology that can demonstrate the ability to produce real, innovative, complex and robust products.

摘要:Reliability of manufacturing resources is an important measure for ensuring quality of service (QoS) and for carrying out service evaluation, and trust modelling in a cloud manufacturing environment. However, no extensive study of this measure has been carried out. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical reliability assessment model to assess manufacturing service reliability. First, we evaluate the reliability of manufacturing resources within an enterprise at three different levels, i.e. component, machine and system level. Then, the system level is extended to form collaborative systems among distributed manufacturing resources by considering logistic reliability. Second, the reliability of the cloud system is also assessed. Finally, by identifying the relationship among different levels of reliability, we formulate the reliability of the entire cloud manufacturing system. A real world case study is presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model.
