简介:5G offers connectivity speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G, presenting the automotive industry with exciting possibilities for vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to everything (V2X) connectivity; and with autonomous driving an increasingly important factor in automakers’ strategies, the industry is excited about the technology’s low latency, which is ideal for the safe and reliable functioning of autonomous vehicles. Vehicular 5G could arrive on roads as early as 2021, but its rollout will be dependent on collaboration amongst the many stakeholders involved, including automakers, Tier 1s, telcos, chipset manufacturers and governments. When it does roll out, however, its first use in automotive will be in connected cars. The first mainstream autonomous drive offerings are not expected until a few years later, giving automakers an important opportunity to fine-tune their V2V activities ahead of an autonomous vehicle rollout.

标题:Application of smart honeycomb structures for automotive passive safety

简介:Nowadays, most energy-absorbing devices used in industry absorb energy through permanent deformation. In some cases, consumers have to repair or even replace energy absorbers even after a mild collision. The work presented in this paper proposes a novel reusable solution in the form of a hybrid bumper-crush can design where a recoverable structure is integrated into the bumper beam and crush can for a mild-collision situation in addition to the traditional energy absorbers recommended for more severe collisions. The main investigation is focused around the performance and optimisation of a negative-stiffness honeycomb, the recoverable structure and the honeycomb-filled elements. A comprehensive study was carried out to investigate numerically the behaviour of these energy-absorbing structures in crash conditions, corresponding to real scenarios and simulated using a specially developed finite element model.

摘要:Increasingly the convergence of natural environment (land, water, air and life), built environment (housing, buildings, transportation and infrastructure) and digital environment (computing power, the internet, big data, and technology) is shaping the economies and societies. Smart living is taking root. Mass customization of products and services is preferred over mass production. Businesses wish to serve an individual customer at a competitive cost comparable to the mass production cost, with shortest possible development time and production time. This requires manufacturing to change from a more labour intensive processes to information technology enabled mechanical processes. Digital manufacturing is a broader concept of manufacturing innovation in which the digital and material advancements enable the company to conceive products in a desired style and quantity in time scales shorter than the conventional methods while efficiently managing the entire product lifecycle. It is about defining manufacturing processes and managing manufacturing process information via full digital product definition. It encompasses visualization, manufacturing simulation, ergonomic and human factor analyses, holistic view of product and process design, and product design sensitive to the process constraints and capabilities. This article emphasizes the need and driving forces for adopting digital manufacturing, transformation of manufacturing to smart manufacturing, present applications and future scope of digital manufacturing.

标题:Digital factory technologies for robotic automation and enhanced manufacturing cell design

摘要:The fourth industrial revolution is characterised by the increased use of digital tools, allowing for the virtual representation of a real production environment at different levels, from the entire production plant to a single machine or a specific process or operation. In this framework, Digital Factory technologies, based on the employment of digital modelling and simulation tools, can be used for short-term analysis and validation of production control strategies or for medium term production planning or production system design/redesign. In this research work, a Digital Factory methodology is proposed to support the enhancement of an existing manufacturing cell for the fabrication of aircraft engine turbine vanes via robotic automation of its deburring station. To configure and verify the correct layout of the upgraded manufacturing cell with the aim to increase its performance in terms of resource utilization and throughput time, 3D Motion Simulation and Discrete Event Simulation are jointly employed for the modeling and simulation of different cell settings for proper layout configuration, safe motion planning and resource utilization improvement. Validation of the simulation model is carried out by collecting actual data from the physical reconfigured manufacturing cell and comparing these data to the model forecast with the aim to adapt the digital model accordingly to closely represent the physical manufacturing system.

标题:Collaboration of Multiple Autonomous Industrial Robots through Optimal Base Placements

简介:Multiple autonomous industrial robots can be of great use in manufacturing applications, particularly if the environment is unstructured and custom manufacturing is required. Autonomous robots that are equipped with manipulators can collaborate to carry out manufacturing tasks such as surface preparation by means of grit-blasting, surface coating or spray painting, all of which require complete surface coverage. However, as part of the collaboration process, appropriate base placements relative to the environment and the target object need to be determined by the robots. The problem of finding appropriate base placements is further complicated when the object under consideration is large and has a complex geometric shape, and thus the robots need to operate from a number of base placements in order to obtain complete coverage of the entire object. To address this problem, an approach for Optimization of Multiple Base Placements (OMBP) for each robot is proposed in this paper. The approach aims to optimize base placements for multi-robot collaboration by taking into account task-specific objectives such as makespan, fair workload division amongst the robots, and coverage percentage; and manipulator-related objectives such as torque and manipulability measure. In addition, the constraint of robots maintaining an appropriate distance between each other and relative to the environment is taken into account. Simulated and real-world experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach and to verify that the simulated results are accurate and reliable.
