标题:Smart manufacturing and energy systems

简介:While many U.S. manufacturing operations utilize optimization for individual unit processes, smart manufacturing (SM) systems that integrate manufacturing intelligence in real time across an entire production operation are not pervasive in industry. A vendor-agnostic SM platform is under development that integrates information technology, models, and simulations driven by real-time plant data and performance metrics. By utilizing existing process control and automation systems, manufacturing organizations can manage systems at a much lower cost, optimizing process knowledge and improving energy productivity. Three case studies are presented: steam methane reforming to make hydrogen, optimization of a heat treatment furnace for metals processing, and a fuel cell system, all of which utilize high fidelity models as a starting point for optimization and control. The Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition has led the national effort in SM, and the recently established National Manufacturing Innovation Institute funded by DOE, private industry, and state governments will be described.

标题:Repurposing Manufacturing Lines on the Fly with Multi-agent Systems for the Web of Things

简介:Multi-agent systems (MAS) have long been envisioned as a key enabling technology in manufacturing, but this promise is yet to be realized: the lack of proper models, architectures, tooling, and the high level of expertise required for designing and programming agent-based manufacturing systems have hindered their large-scale acceptance. The emerging Web of Things (WoT), now being standardized at the W3C and IETF, provides new research opportunities that could help MAS enter the mainstream. In this paper, we present an approach to design scalable and flexible agent-based manufacturing systems that integrates automated planning with multi-agent oriented programming for the WoT: autonomous agents synthesize production plans using semantic descriptions of Web-based artifacts and coordinate with one another via multi-agent organizations; engineers can program and repurpose the systems on the fly via an intuitive Web user interface. The systems use the Web as an application architecture (and not just as a transport layer), which facilitates the seamless integration of geographically distributed production cells. To demonstrate our approach, we implemented a prototypical production cell that uses industry-grade robots and an augmented reality interface for human workers. Together, these contributions demonstrate a means to achieve an intriguing vision for the forthcoming fourth industrial revolution: a global collective intelligence for manufacturing.

For transport operators and logistics providers, autonomy offers the promise of improved fuel consumption and operational efficiency along with fewer collisions. Platooning is emerging as a gateway technology that offers many of the benefits of full autonomy without half of the technological or legal obstacles. This concept that began in the field of bicycle racing has been eagerly applied to trucking, and with impressive results. The cost savings on fuel alone is enough to make a business case for the initial financial outlay, but add in the savings on fewer drivers and it becomes increasingly attractive. As platooning is gradually proven in the field, players may begin to question the need for a driver in the second or third vehicle. Imagine a single driver leading a fleet of three heavy trucks across the highway. At some point, even this lead truck driver may disappear.

简介:Increasing the flexibility and general-purpose applicability of robots is a longstanding goal. Several avenues of research are addressing these goals, ranging from integration of multiple sensors to allow robots to perceive their surroundings and adapt accordingly, to more sophisticated control algorithms that enable robots to re-plan based on current status, to development of more dexterous means of manipulating objects. As part of the manipulation thrust, there has been a recent increase in the development of robotic hands. Inspired by nature, these end effectors hold potential for allowing robots to pick up and manipulate a broader range of objects, without requiring customized end-of-arm tooling or grippers. With this rapidly-growing number of robot hands with diverse designs, there is a need to capture their individual competencies and characteristics under a unified framework. In addition to knowledge of basic hand characteristics such as the number of fingers, degrees of freedom, and degrees of actuation, performance metrics can provide valuable insight into not only the raw traits of the technology, but also their task and function-level performance capabilities. These measures can then be used to help match capabilities to end-user needs as well as provide researchers and developers insight for improving their hardware and software designs. This is a working document where periodic updates will be made based on public comment and lessons-learned from exercising the test methods.

The material consists of clay earth, rice straw, and rice husk,” Massimo Moretti, CEO of WASP, told Digital Trends. “The natural fibers allow [us to minimize] the shrinkage of the dry mixture and confer mechanical strength to the layered wall. By using the wet pan mill, the raw mixture has reached an interesting homogeneous plasticity that permits a good resolution in printed texture.” Aside from the earth-and-rice-based material, concrete makes up the main building foundations, while the roof is mostly timber. The building is 215-square-feet, taking around 10 days to complete. Additional time would be required to properly furnish the place but this timescale is very impressive. The $1,000 price tag wouldn’t hold up for a commercial build as this only includes material costs and not labor. Still, the material price alone is impressive.

简介:Mitsubishi Electric Company appear to be dipping their toes into the additive manufacturing industry with their new dot forming technology. Dot forming is a high speed, high quality mix of a few different technologies jumbled together. It takes aspects of laser forming, computer numerical control (CNC) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). As one would expect, Mitsubishi are leveraging the new technique for automotive and aerospace production.

The method is quite similar to DED, in that it also uses a metal wire and extruder mechanism. This can be quite inexpensive, as the process could use common laser welding wires for objects. Unlike DED however, the nozzle is not stationary to a specific axis and can move in multiple directions. As with most forms of 3D printing, the machine builds the model on a surface from bottom to top, layer by layer. The machine controls pulsed laser irradiation, the supply of metal wires and shield gas and the shaping position to form the object. It has an accuracy 60 percent higher than other more conventional consecutive forming technologies. Another advantage over traditional forming is that of reduced oxidation by a factor of more than 20 percent due to how high temperature areas are limited to a narrow spot forming area.

摘要:CAPP system is the missing link between CAD/CAM system. Two types of operation of CAPP systems can be distinguished. The first one is the backward process planning, where the part is transformed from its ready state to the stock state. The second method is the forward planning, where the stock is transformed into the finished part. Backward process planning allow for the greater degree of automation, but is difficult for the acceptation among the industrial users. One of the problem in the forward process planning is the necessity to use the manufacturing features which do not occur in the finished part, they occur only in the part intermediate states. The paper propose so called virtual manufacturing features to solve this problem.

标题:Manufacturing service reliability assessment in cloud manufacturing

摘要:Reliability of manufacturing resources is an important measure for ensuring quality of service (QoS) and for carrying out service evaluation, and trust modelling in a cloud manufacturing environment. However, no extensive study of this measure has been carried out. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical reliability assessment model to assess manufacturing service reliability. First, we evaluate the reliability of manufacturing resources within an enterprise at three different levels, i.e. component, machine and system level. Then, the system level is extended to form collaborative systems among distributed manufacturing resources by considering logistic reliability. Second, the reliability of the cloud system is also assessed. Finally, by identifying the relationship among different levels of reliability, we formulate the reliability of the entire cloud manufacturing system. A real world case study is presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model.

摘要:This paper proposes an experimental approach for monitoring and inspection of the formation accuracy in ultra-precision grinding (UPG) with respect to the chatter vibration. Two factors related to the grinding progress, the grinding speed of grinding wheel and spindle, and the oil pressure of the hydrostatic bearing are taken into account to determining the accuracy. In the meantime, a mathematical model of the radius deviation caused by the micro vibration is also established and applied in the experiments. The results show that the accuracy is sensitive to the vibration and the forming accuracy is much improved with proper processing parameters. It is found that the accuracy of aspheric surface can be less than 4 μm when the grinding speed is 1400 r/min and the wheel speed is 100 r/min with the oil pressure being 1.1 MPa.
