简介:According to the latest statistics published by the European Commission last week, EU road fatalities have been reduced by more than half since 2001, from 54,900 just after the turn of the century to 25,260 in 2017. By contrast, the number of passenger cars on Europe’s roads increased from just over 200 million to 259.7 million during the same period. So, despite the fact that there are nearly 60 million more cars on our roads today, accidents still have gone down significantly. The European Union also has the safest roads in the world, counting 49 fatalities per million inhabitants annually, while the global average is 174 fatalities.

摘要:Companies who operate in highly regulated industries have further challenges to the usual competition, continuous cost reduction and product development challenges. To address these requirements companies optimise their business processes and change their applications and information systems to support their evolving way of doing business. Workflow management technology eases the achievement of these necessities by providing methodologies, software and tools to support business process modelling, reengineering and workflow automation. Business process mapping is necessary in order to capture business processes as workflow specifications. Then, these systems allow business process reengineering, helping the optimisation of specified processes, and workflow automation, in order to generate a lean digital workflow from the specifications. There are many opportunities to benefit from this technology in aerospace applications, however these bring several implementation challenges in large global companies operating in multiple markets and need to be carefully managed. This research provides an overview of the benefits that digital workflows implementation can potentially bring to aerospace companies, together with a detailed description of significant challenges, regarding both the implementation of digital workflows and risks related to human factors. The study increases industry awareness on the importance of driving a digital transformation through implementing digital workflows, and where to start this implementation in a manufacturing business, highlighting the success factors.

标题:Digital factory technologies for robotic automation and enhanced manufacturing cell design

摘要:The fourth industrial revolution is characterised by the increased use of digital tools, allowing for the virtual representation of a real production environment at different levels, from the entire production plant to a single machine or a specific process or operation. In this framework, Digital Factory technologies, based on the employment of digital modelling and simulation tools, can be used for short-term analysis and validation of production control strategies or for medium term production planning or production system design/redesign. In this research work, a Digital Factory methodology is proposed to support the enhancement of an existing manufacturing cell for the fabrication of aircraft engine turbine vanes via robotic automation of its deburring station. To configure and verify the correct layout of the upgraded manufacturing cell with the aim to increase its performance in terms of resource utilization and throughput time, 3D Motion Simulation and Discrete Event Simulation are jointly employed for the modeling and simulation of different cell settings for proper layout configuration, safe motion planning and resource utilization improvement. Validation of the simulation model is carried out by collecting actual data from the physical reconfigured manufacturing cell and comparing these data to the model forecast with the aim to adapt the digital model accordingly to closely represent the physical manufacturing system.

摘要:The roadmap has identified a total of 93 open gaps and corresponding recommendations across fivetopical areas: 1) design; 2) process and materials (precursor materials, process control, post-processing,and finished material properties); 3) qualification and certification; 4) nondestructive evaluation; and 5)maintenance. Of that total, 18 gaps/recommendations have been identified as high priority, 51 asmedium priority, and 24 as low priority. A “gap” means no published standard or specification exists thatcovers the particular issue in question. In 65 cases, additional research and development (R&D) isneeded.As with the earlier version of this document, the hope is that the roadmap will be broadly adopted bythe standards community and that it will facilitate a more coherent and coordinated approach to thefuture development of standards and specifications for additive manufacturing.To that end, it is envisioned that the roadmap will continue to be promoted in the coming year. Theroadmap may be updated in the future to assess progress on its implementation and to identifyemerging issues that require further discussion

简介:Submillimeter-scale domains offer wide-ranging benefits for chemical and biological fields, which have motivated researchers to develop a diversity of strategies for manufacturing integrated microfluidic systems. Historically, microfluidic device construction has predominantly relied on micromachining technologies that are rooted in the semiconductor and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industries. These methodologies have enabled microfluidic platforms to be fabricated with fully integrated microelectronics a critical requirement for applications such as electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis (DEP), surface acoustic wave (SAW) actuation, digital microfluidics (e.g., via electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) phenomena), and on-chip electrochemical detection. Despite the distinguishing capabilities afforded by conventional microfabrication protocols, a number of inherent limitations have given rise to increasing interest in alternative approaches for microdevice construction in the form of additive manufacturing or "three-dimensional (3D) printing". Here we review recent progress in the development of both 3D printed microfluidics and 3D printed microelectronics. We evaluate the distinctive benefits and constraints associated with emerging 3D printing technologies with respect to the fabrication of both microfluidic and microeledtronic systems. Lastly, we examine the potential use of 3D printing-based approaches for manufacturing microfluidic devices with integrated microelectronics.

简介:This paper aims at providing a comprehensive outlook on the economic and organisational rationale of 3D printing technologies and their implications for innovation in the Italian manufacturing industry. Despite its limited impact on the industrial world, the idea of printing actual 3D objects has clearly captured the popular imagination; 3D printing is often linked to 'big changes' or to sometimes indefinite industrial revolutions in progress because it is considered that 3D printing will eventually enable 'mass customisation'. None of the most significant actual applications of AM in Italian manufacturing, however, suggests that any real 'manufacturing revolution' has started or can be foreseen in the near future for consumer goods. For these AM is neither competitive today, nor can it be made so in the future, unless some sort of technological quantum leap occurs.
