简介:The focus of this paper is on enhancing the possibilities of manufacturing operations by taking advantage of augmented reality (AR) technology and highlighting its benefits by implementing a product manufacturing case. The latter appearance of augmented headsets, such as the Microsoft HoloLens allows more opportunities for creating innovative solutions. After introducing concepts about smart manufacturing, improvements regarding human-robot collaboration in assembly tasks are presented. The developed scenario is based on the integration of AR, a cobot, a see-through device, a digital twin and an algorithm for assembly visualization. This approach pledges a compelling interaction of the 3D real and virtual unit, so that the operator can work in a more intuitive environment. This methodology has been implemented on a assembly case to investigate users' enhanced perception using the virtual world while cooperating with the robot.

However, significant opportunities exist to improve truck efficiency, and ever more stringent fuel economy, emissions and noise targets are being set by regulators in all major truck markets. Electrification increasingly looks to be the only long-term solution to these challenges. Switching from tried and tested combustion engine power to battery or fuel cell electric trucks requires careful business planning, and potentially significant upfront investment. Education, marketing and incentives will be important in the transition away from fossil fuel-powered trucking to ensure buyers understand the long-term benefits in terms of total cost of ownership, corporate social responsibility and regulatory future-proofing.

简介:Desktop 3D printers are fantastic at creating high-quality and complex parts on demand, but their greatest weakness has always been speed. They can only print one object at a time, one thin layer at a time. And there are several speed-limiting factors to FDM/FFF 3D printers, with the main four being: the amount of force that can be applied to the filament as it’s pushed through the nozzle, how quickly heat can be transferred to the filament to melt it, how fast the printhead can move around the build area, and the rate that the material solidifies after it’s extruded because it needs to support the next layer.
The solidifying problem they solved like most other developers, by blasting air at it. The remaining hurdles required more creativity. When filament is pushed, it’s typically done by running it between a drive gear and an idler; tension is put on the drive gear, which has little teeth that bite into the filament and push it down as the drive gear turns. If there’s too much tension on the filament, the drive gear eats into the filament and builds up with plastic before eventually losing grip. Too little tension results in slippage and gaps in extrusion.

简介:Additive Manufacturing (AM) opens new opportunities for the economy and the society and the global market of this technology is growing rapidly. However, quality assurance remains the main barrier for a broader integration of AM in the industrial sector. Most quality-related problems of AM are caused by uncontrolled variations in the production chain. By identifying the key controlling parameters or the “Key Characteristics (KC)” and introducing the proper process control protocol for these parameters, the effect of these variations can be limited and expensive monitoring, rework, repair and quality-related problems can often be avoided. In addition, these KCs can also be used to achieve sustainability in AM. In addition of providing a product with a quality that satisfies the client's requirements, the manufacturing resources usage (energy and material) can be minimized. The work presented in this paper reviews the recent literature related to sustainability in AM and proposes a new approach into how the key characteristics, which are normally used to reduce variations in production, can give an insight to a sustainable AM.

标题:Relevant factors for the energy consumption of industrial robots

简介:This work investigates the energy consumption of industrial robots in the context of automotive industry. The purpose is to identify the most influencing parameters and variables and to propose best practices with focus on energy efficiency. The analysis approach is composed of three experiments performed in a simulation environment that test different values of programming parameters and variables, such as joint speed, acceleration, robot payload. The first experiment focuses on energy consumption of robots at standstill. The second one considers the robot moving along different paths. Finally, the third one analyses how the joint friction is affected by load, speed and temperature and how it influences the energy consumption. Results show that at standstill, it is important to reduce dwell time, select an energy efficient position and reduce the programmed value of the timer responsible for turning off the servomotors. While moving, it is important to select maximum continuous termination for intermediate points and avoid low speeds. Regarding friction variation, results show that at high motor speed, low temperatures increase energy consumption. In order to evaluate the contribution of the best practices in a real environment, they are applied to a welding robotic cell of an automotive industry.

From this information it can provide valuable ingredients for companies in sustainable their operation. The identified factor of manufacturing practices is time based management and the dependent variables is manufacturing capabilities(focusing on agility. Through the survey, a total of 119 firms representing various industries in Northern Region of Malaysia had responded. The hypotheses involved were tested using correlation and regression techniques. The results of the study support the hypotheses. The multiple regression analysis indicates that there are significant relationships among this role on manufacturing capabilities. It is believed that results of this study will be beneficial to the top management of Malaysian manufacturing industries to focus on tim e based management and agility to increase the manufacturing capabilities.

简介:The United States has a massive trade deficit with China. The growth of the U.S. trade deficit with China, which has increased by more than $100 billion since the beginning of the Great Recession, almost entirely explains why manufacturing employment has not fully recovered along with the rest of the economy. And the growing trade deficit with China isn’t just a post-recession phenomenon hitting manufacturing: it has cost the U.S. millions of jobs throughout the economy since China entered the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, a finding validated by numerous studies.This report underscores the ongoing trade and jobs crisis by updating EPI’s research series on the jobs impact of the U.S.–China trade deficit. The most recent of these reports (Scott 2012; Kimball and Scott 2014; Scott 2017a) look at the effect of the U.S. trade deficit with China since China entered the WTO in 2001. Our model examines the job impacts of trade by subtracting the job opportunities lost to imports from those gained through exports. As with our previous analyses, we find that because imports from China have soared while exports to China have increased much less, the United States is both losing jobs in manufacturing (in electronics and high tech, apparel, textiles, and a range of heavier durable goods industries) and missing opportunities to add jobs in manufacturing (in exporting industries such as transportation equipment, agricultural products, computer and electronic parts, chemicals, machinery, and food and beverages).
