简介:The following article presents a brief literature review conducted to extend our knowledge about how Industry 4.0 affects business models and to identify business model innovations derived in consequence. Based on the results, a set of features, issues and requirements have been identified and three different approaches has been suggested to make firms getting closer to the industry 4.0 phenomenon such as service orientation, networked ecosystems and customer orientation. Furthermore, the impacts on the creation, delivery, and capture of value through the reconfiguration of Business Models due to embracing the Industry 4.0 are depicted. As a result, four different ways to innovate the business models based on different degrees of innovation are proposed to embrace the digitalization. Those paths goes from optimizing internal and external processes or improving customer relationship to creating new value networks or smart products and services through disruptive business models.

This paper builds upon this research gap with a twofold aim: Firstly, the target is to build upon existing groundwork to conclude whether lean management and Industry 4.0 can complement each other. Secondly, this work considers how Industry 4.0 can support specific lean methods. This is exemplified by an electric drives production use case.

简介In order to see the role of industrial robot in a manufacturing process and to see which manufacturing processes have the highest industrial robot application, industrial robot application in Asia/Australia has been analysed. Automation and modernization of a manufacturing process in any industrial branch is impossible without industrial robot application. In Asia, it has been known for years, and this paper will prove it. Annual and total industrial robot application has been analysed in the following manufacturing processes: handling material operations, welding, assembly, processing, dispensing and the other/ undefined, where robots could not be classified in the manufacturing process. Industrial robot application of the leading Asian countries has been analysed, those with the developed industry and others with industry in the developing stages, where the automation and modernization of the manufacturing process is performed. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the industrial robot application in the last three years, at the annual level and the total number (operational stock) of the industrial robot applications. The percentage reference is given of the industrial robot applications in different industrial branches in 2010. It also provides the prediction analysis of the industrial robot applications in the following period till 2014.

标题:Cognitive Robot Referencing System for High Accuracy Manufacturing Task

简介Industrial robots can be considered very repeatable machines, but they usually lack of absolute accuracy. However, high accuracy during the execution of the task is becoming a more and more critical factor in industrial manufacturing domains. For that reason, in order to fully automatize manufacturing processes, high-precision tasks usually need the integration of additional sensors to improve robot accuracy. This paper proposes an embedded, cognitive and self-learning stereo-vision system that can be used to reference the robot position with respect to the work-piece, increasing robot accuracy locally. An industrial use-case is also proposed and experimental results are presented.

标题:Autonomous Materials Handling Robot for Advanced Manufacturing Applications

简介There is a need for mobile robots in reconfigurable manufacturing systems to reduce bottlenecks that occur in associated materials handling systems. These bottlenecks can occur as a result of the mass production of custom products. The project has focused on researching, designing, assembling, testing and validating a two-wheeled autonomous materials handling robot for reconfigurable manufacturing systems. A Mechatronic engineering approach, (system integration), has been used for the project. The approach required a vehicle that was dynamically and statically stable while in operation. Research has been done to obtain the optimum control strategy for the purpose of keeping the robot balanced for variable load characteristics. A navigation system has been researched that will allow the vehicle to perform materials handling tasks necessary to reduce bottlenecks. A wireless communication system has also been incorporated into the infrastructure of the vehicle. Performance analysis and testing in a reconfigurable production environment proves the viability of the materials handling system. This involves vehicle scheduling and routing while performing materials handling tasks.

简介:The global takeoff of additive manufacturing (AM, popularly called three-dimensional, or 3D, printing), it is now apparent, took place some six years ago. “[The year] 2012 was a turning point in AM globally,” consultancy Wohlers Associates president Terry Wohlers tells Engineering News. “The technology really gained attention, investment and traction, in comparison to what had been the case previously.”

The global AM sector grew at an annual average rate of 24.9% over the four years from 2013 to 2017, he notes. The total publicly available value of the sector was $7.34-billion last year (‘publicly available’ because this total excludes the value of parts made, using AM, by many manufacturers, because such data is difficult to obtain; the true total value is thus much higher).

标题:Library in Helsinki Makes 3D Printing Publicly Available

简介:Considering all the amenities it houses, Helsinki’s newest library hardly seems like it can be called one. Open to the public since the last two days, the Oodi houses not just books, but also laser cutters, 3D printers, recording studios, kitchens, a gaming room with PlayStation consoles and an “immersive 3D space” (a room with digital projections ideal for business presentations and art exhibits). The building puts all of these marvellous, modern technologies (and more) into the hands of the average citizen, all in one place.

The Oodi library is one of the most ambitious projects in years. Even its library director, Anna-Maria Soininvaara, is overwhelmed by all these devices, not knowing precisely how they function. After all, her expertise lends itself to literature, not additive manufacturing. Any library would be hard-pressed to find a director that understands all these fields and yet they’ve brought this gorgeous public space to life.

The project is unsurprising, however, considering how much faster the Nordic countries have been in accepting digitisation. Additionally, nowadays all sorts of educational programs are bringing 3D printing education to the classroom and public. It’s no surprise that tech-savvy countries are pushing forward with innovative concepts like this.

In contrast, libraries and education programs in other areas of the world have succumbed to defunding and obsolescence. They can be expensive and hard to justify to the public. So why put so much effort and money into this library? Isn’t it a building that most cynical nations would think has outlived its purpose? The answer, its avid supporters and its creators say, is building a social infrastructure that unites people.

标题:Automatic Driver and Vehicle Safety Monitoring System

简介:Accident is increasing rapidly and is mostly due to drunk driving and drowsiness of drivers. A novel approach is presented in this paper to monitor the physical condition of driver and alert system to reduce human errors by means of an embedded system. Methods: To find a particular person's blood alcohol concentration in their bloodstream, breathalyzer which is also known as breath alcohol detector is used. IR sensor and biomedical sensors are used to detect the drowsiness by monitoring eyes pattern, EMG and EOG signals. These were the basic inspiration for creating the embedded system introduced here. The proposed system includes microcontrollers, alcohol sensor, biomedical sensor, IR sensor, camera modules, GPS, Wi-fi adapter, ZigBee module, solenoid valve and ignition switch circuitry. Findings: The proposed vehicle safety monitoring system will detect blood alcohol concentration (BAC) percentage from the particular person's breath samples. The EOG, EMG and IR sensors are used to monitor driver condition. The warning alarm and ignition switch circuitry are enabled and disabled based on the input values of the monitoring system. Thus, the condition of the driver is continuously monitored and calibrated on a scale. When it exceeds a particular limit, the alarm unit is enabled. GPS and camera module are used to trace the vehicle and driver. The monitored values are serially transferred to the master controller and further upload the data to cloud space by means of Internet which can be accessed or streamed. This data is used to track the vehicle and detect who is driving the car at any instant of time. Conclusion/Improvements: Non-intrusive nature of this system helps to detect driver's physical condition without making inconvenience to him. Real-time and online data transfer system of this system helps the respective authority to take immediate actions. This device can be very helpful for law enforcement department to solve vehicle theft, accident and hit-and-run cases.

标题:Use of Integrated Control to Enhance the Safety of Vehicles in Run-Off-Road Scenarios

简介:In this work, an integrated vehicle control system (IC) is tested in run-off-road scenarios. The integrated approach was employed in order to coordinate vehicle control systems, i.e. the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Four-wheel Steering (4WS) and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). To perform a run-off-road maneuver, a fuzzy virtual test driver was designed. By receiving the lateral position of an obstacle and the vehicle's relative yaw angle, the virtual test driver is capable of following a reference trajectory. Furthermore, to test the performance of the standalone controllers, i.e. ABS, ESP and 4WS, individual maneuvers are performed using a multibody vehicle model. The vehicle without any coordination between the control systems is used as reference. For the simulation results, it is concluded that the IC improves the vehicle stability and maneuverability in comparison with the non-integrated approach.

标题:Remanufacturing challenges and possible lean improvements

简介:Remanufacturing is a viable way to prolong the useful life of an end-of-use product or its parts. Despite its economic, environmental, and social benefits, remanufacturing is associated with many challenges related to core (used product or its part) availability, timing and quality. The aim of this paper is to study how lean production could be used to tackle remanufacturing process challenges and contribute to shorter lead times. To meet this aim, we conducted a literature review and case studies of four remanufacturing companies. The case companies' remanufacturing challenges were: (1) a lack of material requirements planning system, (2) poor core information, (3) a lack of core material, (4) poor spare parts information, (5) a lack of spare parts material, (6) insufficient quality management practices, (7) large inventories, (8) stochastic remanufacturing processes, (9) a lack of supply-demand balance, and (10) insufficient automation. These challenges contribute to long and variable remanufacturing process lead times. To tackle remanufacturing challenges, seven lean-based improvements with a major effect on improvements in lead time were suggested: standard operations, continuous flow, Kanban, teamwork, employee cross-training, layout for continuous flow, and supplier partnership. Providing that the suggested improvements are implemented, a possible lead time reduction of 83-99 per cent was projected.

简介:We all know the old sales joke: You can have it good, fast, or cheap, so pick two. High-precision plasma cutting used to be that way, too, only the options were cut speed, quality, and parts life. Today fabricators enjoy the best of all worlds (see Figure 1). On 0.25-in. steel, top cutting speeds reach 100 inches per minute. (Speeds can reach 150 IPM or more if cuts are on long, straight edges or cut quality is not critical.) A high-precision system can achieve a cut accuracy of ±0.01 to 0.05 in. and kerf widths as narrow as 0.05 in. Consumables can last from 1,300 to more than 3,700 arc starts, and systems can cut any conductive material from 10 gauge up to 2 in. thick.
