简介:Industrial Internet-of-Things (HOT) is transforming manufacturing operations. Successful adoption of HOT requires understanding today's factories, their diverse inhabitants, and the obstacles to further digitization. It also requires anticipating how these conditions and inhabitants will change in the future. As organizations maneuver through this transformation, the narrative often centers on the trope that technology enables and humans hinder. Our work suggests the opposite. Humans will have plenty to do in the future factory and will be critical to transformation success. Further, workers see change as critical for maintaining competitiveness of both themselves personally and their companies. This paper draws from a study of 145 manufacturing workers and leaders from a range of manufacturing settings. It identifies triggers that motivate consideration of smart technologies today, examines participant expectations for the future, and uses personas as a mechanism for examining differences that are likely to influence the design and adoption of these technologies.

简介:Smart manufacturing (SM) is a term generally applied to the improvement in manufacturing operations through integration of systems, linking of physical and cyber capabilities, and taking advantage of information including leveraging the big data evolution. SM adoption has been occurring unevenly across industries, thus there is an opportunity to look to other industries to determine solution and roadmap paths for industries such as biochemistry or biology. The big data evolution affords an opportunity for managing significantly larger amounts of information and acting on it with analytics for improved diagnostics and prognostics. The analytics approaches can be defined in terms of dimensions to understand their requirements and capabilities, and to determine technology gaps. The semiconductor manufacturing industry has been taking advantage of the big data and analytics evolution by improving existing capabilities such as fault detection, and supporting new capabilities such as predictive maintenance. For most of these capabilities: (1) data quality is the most important big data factor in delivering high quality solutions; and (2) incorporating subject matter expertise in analytics is often required for realizing effective on-line manufacturing solutions. In the future, an improved big data environment incorporating smart manufacturing concepts such as digital twin will further enable analytics; however, it is anticipated that the need for incorporating subject matter expertise in solution design will remain.

标题:Effects of Deformation Conditions on the Rolling Force during Variable Gauge Rolling

简介:In this study, effects of different deformation conditions on the rolling force were studied during variable gauge rolling processes. To this end, variations of rolling forces with rolling times were analyzed at different roll diameters, absolute thickness reductions and friction coefficients. Considering the rolling force variations, an abrupt change in the outlet section of downward and outward rolling was observed at all deformation conditions. The experimental data, along with the results obtained from finite element method (FEM) simulations, revealed that this drop in the rolling force (DRF) is strongly dependent on the deformation conditions. It was found that the DRF value increases with increasing absolute thickness reduction, roll diameter and friction coefficient. Furthermore, dependency of contact length on the roll radius and wedge angle (slope of the thickness transition zone) was investigated. Accordingly, it was concluded that the variations of the DRF value can be mainly attributed to the changes in the contact length during variable gauge rolling. Moreover, slab method analysis was used to model the effects of deformation conditions on DRF.

标题:On-line fault diagnosis of FMS based on flows analysis

简介:Any flexible manufacturing system (FMS) may face fault which may disrupt the production and cause delays. Thus, the identification of the source of failure is very important to intervene rapidly. This paper aims to develop an indirect and incremental diagnostic approach to identify the root cause of the observed delay in the context of a single fault occurrence. In this study the observation is done only at the output of the system to measure the output dates of each part and to detect the eventual delay. For this purpose, a mathematical model is developed to model the proposed diagnostic approach of FMS under cyclic scheduling. This cyclic approach provides intermediary reference points to detect any discrepancy with regard the predictive scheduling. These intermediary reference points correspond to the end of each cycle defined by the scheduling. To solve this problem, the constraint programming technique is used. Finally, the performance of the proposed approach is evaluated with respect to the literature. The major merit of this study is to prove the capacity to diagnose efficiently the progressive faults of a plant without the necessity to add sensors dedicated to its monitoring.

标题:A comparison of machine learning methods for cutting parameters prediction in high speed turning process

简介:Support vector machines are arguably one of the most successful methods for data classification, but when using them in regression problems, literature suggests that their performance is no longer state-of-the-art. This paper compares performances of three machine learning methods for the prediction of independent output cutting parameters in a high speed turning process. Observed parameters were the surface roughness (Ra), cutting force (Fc), and tool lifetime (T). For the modelling, support vector regression (SVR), polynomial (quadratic) regression, and artificial neural network (ANN) were used. In this research, polynomial regression has outperformed SVR and ANN in the case of Fc and Ra prediction, while ANN had the best performance in the case of T, but also the worst performance in the case of Fc and Ra. The study has also shown that in SVR, the polynomial kernel has outperformed linear kernel and RBF kernel. In addition, there was no significant difference in performance between SVR and polynomial regression for prediction of all three output machining parameters.

标题:Accuracy of Crash Data for Wet Pavement Crash Analysis

简介:The impact of rainfall and wet pavement has the potential to influence the number of traffic crashes along a roadway as the reduction in pavement friction and visibility potentially lead to a greater number of crashes. To study this impact, researchers have used traffic crash records with reported roadway conditions to determine if there is a relationship between the rainfall event and the number of traffic crashes. This paper examines the accuracy of the reported roadway condition related to the presence of rainfall using a crash database and rainfall records from gauges throughout the state of Alabama. The results of this study indicate that there is a high likelihood, or almost 12 percent of the crashes in the database, where the pavement condition will be reported as wet when there is no rainfall occurring in the area and when there was not a report of rainfall in the recent timeframe. This high percentage of incorrect values might influence the results of statistical studies intended to evaluate the influence of rainfall on crashes.

简介:Nowadays, growing quantities of process models in the process planning system are generated in enterprises based on the 3D design model. Usually, these process models contain a great deal of process information. So, how to reuse the embedded manufacturing information plays an important role in the competitive global market for the enterprises increasingly, because it can save enormous time and cost. In this paper, a new method is presented to reuse the existing manufacturing information for the slightly changed 3D design model. First, the hierarchical data structure of process route is introduced to represent the dynamic evolution process of mechanical part model, which takes working procedure model as the carrier of manufacturing information. Second, a multilevel machining feature descriptor which captures different levels of information for each process is designed to search the query machining feature. Moreover, the proposed algorithm of obtaining the main machining feature face for accelerating feature match is given to filter out unmatched feature. Then, the strategies of reusing the manufacturing information are proposed: the matched machining features can automatically obtain the manufacturing information and the unmatched machining features are dealt with by interactive mode. Finally, some slightly changed aircraft structural parts are utilized to verify our proposed method for reusing the manufacturing information. A prototype system has been developed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

简介:In spite of the different types of upper limb prosthetics that are available in the market now days, the researches should carry out to present a various methods and development in order to reach the optimum level in this field. This paper presents a methodology to design and manufacture an artificial hand for prosthetic application. The proposed design is a five finger hand with the forearm actuated by under -actuated system composed of tendons and servomotors. The manufacture strategy started by design the model using the solidworks software and manufacture by 3d printing techniq ue. it possess 15 Dof, 3dof for each finger. Analyzing of the forward kinematics had also been carried out using the matlab robotic toolbox to present the workspace and fingertip coordinates. The hand was tested to perform gesture mo vements and some grasping movement by using a myoelectric control system, and it was able to approximates the manipulation abilities o f human hand very well.

The report suggests that this drop comes from a growing gap between larger and smaller companies. Larger companies can more easily expand their portfolios by purchasing smaller businesses or building new or larger facilities, while smaller companies compete to stay relevant as the larger ones expand. According to the report, demand for equipment needed for industrial activities is only increasing, including in the construction and oil and gas industries, but the larger companies that can cover the full spectrum of products needed for these operations push smaller companies out.
