文摘:The aging population is increasingly bringing to the fore the requirements of assistive technologies in our health care systems and in the home environment. In addition, medical conditions that lead to motor and sensory impairments also necessitate technologies to rehabilitate patients back to mobility. Indeed, several devices and robots have been developed to address these challenges. However, a plethora of these technologies are burdensome to operate by the users, largely because they were designed without the involvement of the target population. Ultimately, the rate of abandonment of such devices has been high because of poor usability related to high metabolic cost, discomfort, and lack of sensory feedback. As roboticists and engineers, we should consider not only simply technological facets but also human aspects of research (1). This could be accomplished by truly integrating the user with the device to achieve embodiment and by addressing real-world impediments experienced by people with physical disabilities.
