【摘要】 Developing single photon UV detection for compact chemical and biological sensors. This report summarizes the main lines of effort for the Electro-Optics Materials Research (EOMR) program including its goals and major accomplishments, focusing on the past 5 years. This EOMR program was an effort within 601102A.31B.1 titled "Optoelectronic and Integrated Photonic Materials and Device Research" for FY16-FY19 and 611102A.AA8.1 titled "Photonic Materials and Device Research" for FY20-FY21. The focus of this EOMR for most of the program was to develop novel semiconductor optoelectronic devices to reduce the size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) of chemical and biological detection and identification systems.

【摘要】 Alpine Advanced Materials (Dallas, TX) has broadened the scope of its engineered nanocomposite, HX5, to also target unmanned aerial vehicles. A material option that is 50 percent lighter and 93 percent the strength of 6061-T6 aluminum, HX5 also offers superior electromagnetic shielding and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Reinforced with carbon fibers and proprietary nanomaterials, HX5 has a specific strength twice that of 6061-T6. The material outperforms standard thermoplastics in strength as well as moldability, allowing for complex shapes to be molded, formed, extruded or machined like aluminum. Engineered to replace machined aerospace-grade aluminum at half the weight, HX5 has both a high tensile and compressive strength, low thermal conductivity, and is abrasion-resistant.

【摘要】 The quality of epitaxial layers in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) has a primary impact on QCL operation, and establishing correlations between epitaxial growth and materials properties is of critical importance for continuing improvements in QCL performance. Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are compact coherent optical sources that emit over a wide wavelength range in the mid- to long-infrared (3-25 μm) as well as into part of the terahertz spectrum. With recent developments of AlInAs/GaInAs/InP QCLs exhibiting watt-class output power levels at room temperature in the mid-wave infrared (MWIR, 3-7 μm) and long-wave infrared (LWIR, 8-12 μm) regions, QCLs have become increasingly attractive for numerous technological applications including infrared countermeasures, free-space communications, and chemical and biological sensing.
