【摘要】 Roller pumps are used in medicine to pump blood in extracorporeal blood circuits. Blood is subjected to mechanical stress in these peristaltic pumps, due to the complete tube occlusion. This stress causes damage to red blood cells (hemolysis). We present a novel peristaltic pumping principle that addresses these issues. In contrast to conventional roller pumps, the tube is stimulated by a circulating eccentric oscillation. Therefore, this type of pump does not require complete tube occlusion. The blood is less mechanically stressed and hemolysis is reduced by 55% compared to a roller pump.

【摘要】 How to effectively cool highly integrated electronic devices is a hot and challenging research problem. To improve the cooling performance of microchannel systems, a new piezoelectric pump-based cooling system is proposed in the paper, which includes a piezoelectric pump with umbrella-shaped valves and microchannel-based heat sinks. We theoretically analyzed the effects of flow rates and heat transfer coefficients on the cooling performance when using four different types of microchannel-based heat sinks. Then, the piezoelectric pump and those heat sinks were fabricated, and the maximum output flow rate was experimentally measured. A CPU with a fixed power input was chosen to experimentally access the overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat sinks. The theoretical and experimental results revealed that the cooling performance of the proposed system was related to both the output flow rate and the overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat sinks. At last, we demonstrated that the piezoelectric cooling system, equipped with the heat sink of the tandem Y-shape bifurcation microchannel, had the best cooling performance: the CPU temperature was stabilized within 60.6℃ when the working power of the CPU was fixed at 30 W, resulting in a cooling efficiency up to 51.12%.

【摘要】 The transient dynamics of air flow running through the moving intake valve gaps in combustion cylinders is crucial to the performance of spark-ignition direct-injection engines. However, research on the air flow behavior in the vicinity of valve exits is still limited. In this work, transient air flow characteristics of a custom-designed dual-valve system under the operating conditions of a fixed valve lift and a vibrating valve lift at two frequencies are experimentally investigated. The velocity vector field measured using planar particle image velocimetry (PIV) is first analyzed in time domain based on temporal mean and root-mean-square (RMS) values. Comparison of temporal mean flow fields reveals the difference in flow pattern while RMS represents the variation of intake air jet velocity along the inlet path of the vibration-affected jet. Instantaneous snapshots provide direct analysis of the valve vibration-induced intake air jet behavior. Furthermore, investigation in frequency domain extends insights into the dominant spectral components of flow structures. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) applied to every vector on the velocity field yields a vibration frequency affected zone (VFAZ), indicating the regions where the effect of valve vibration is significant. By employing dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) method, the spatio-temporal PIV results are decomposed into modes with specific frequencies. Reconstructed flow field using modes with the valve operating frequency visually unveils a cyclic vortex structure near the valve exit. In summary, this study elucidates the mechanism of near-valve intake air flow impingement and interaction behavior induced by the valve vibrating motion.

【摘要】 The present work analyzes the three-dimensional unsteady flow structure of a low-speed low-pressure ratio axial fan stage operating at stall conditions. Unsteady numerical simulations were conducted with the elsA software, which solves the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations on a full-annulus calculation domain for the rotor and the stator. The analyses will focus on a near stall operating point, the stall inception mechanisms, and the final rotating stall pattern. Numerical simulations are confronted with experimental measurements from high-frequency Kulite transducers mounted on the casing near the rotor blades and the stator blades. The results show that boundary layer separation occurs on the stator blade close to the hub region at near stall conditions. The reverse flow interacts with the main flow to form a vortex shedding phenomenon. The frequency is not clocked with the blade passage frequency, requiring unsteady full-annulus methodology even for a stable operating point. It is also shown that the final state of the rotating stall region is composed of a single part-span cell that occupies three-quarters of the circumference and rotates at 60% of the shaft speed. This pattern agrees with the experimental measurements in terms of both the number of cells and the rotational speed. Finally, the paper demonstrates that without inlet distortion, the mechanism of the onset of the rotating stall is incorrectly predicted by the simulation. However, when a total pressure inlet distortion is applied, the computational fluid dynamics produces the same inception mechanism that is observed experimentally.

【摘要】 The use of refrigerants from the hydrofluorocarbon family has been restricted due to their high global warming potential, and the manufacturers have been using R1234yf recently, a refrigerant from the hydrofluoroolefin family, as a substitute for R134a in mobile air conditioning (MAC) systems. In this study, a laboratory MAC system with a variable-capacity compressor was set up, and its comparative energetic and exergetic performance was evaluated for the cases of using R1234yf and R134a by changing the test conditions in a wide range. The results revealed that the system with R1234yf provided on average 13.7% less cooling duty and 12.8% less coefficient of performance based on the total power input relative to the system with R134a. Furthermore, the system with R1234yf destructed on average 18.9% more exergy per unit cooling duty. Excluding the condenser, the components of the R1234yf system destructed more exergy per unit cooling duty than those of the R134a one.

【摘要】 Condition monitoring of gearboxes in industrial settings is often based on trending vibration levels at the gear mesh frequencies and sideband frequencies associated with the rotational speeds of mating shafts. However, the vibration levels for setting different alarms related to gearbox health are debated. Another issue of controversy is the question of what an indicator of fault severity is: is it the energy in the gear mesh frequencies or the energies in the sidebands? In this work, we analysed the vibration signature caused by gear tooth seeded faults of different levels. The data was analysed in both the time and frequency domains. The experimental study was conducted on a Machinery Fault Simulator (MFS). The pinion gear in the gearbox was intentionally faulted with increasing severities and a vibration signal was collected for each case using IEPE accelerometers. Data was also obtained using a high-resolution encoder. Signals were analysed using time synchronous averaging and traditional spectrum analysis. The results indicate that the vibration signature of a faulted bevel gear tooth is a pulse in the time domain. Because of this impulse signal, strong sidebands arise in the spectrum around the mesh frequency and the energy in the sidebands is a better indicator of the severity of the tooth defect.
